Loved this information this week. The girls (10, 8 and 5) have had a tough year with the dad leaving, and often are fighting at a level Im not used to. Am looking forward to putting into place. Now am off for a relaxing bath to ‘centre’ before they get back from their dads – this is usually a tricky time as we all readjust to the separation and getting back to our own groove in this house. I[m off to out the lamps on and light the fire to make it as welcoming as possible for them. Have cleared my decks so that I’m able to focus on them 100% when they get back …. thanks for the tips.

What a lovely cosy nest you’re creating for your girl’s return Alana. I can imagine the girls return with a lot of feelings to process, so lovely that you’re getting physically and emotionally prepared to be present with them.

I’ve been working hard at employing these methods with my kids for the past couple of weeks, especially centering, trying to be conscious of my reactions and listening/empathizing. I can feel the connection between myself and my kids strengthening, and I feel really good about that. At the same time, it feels like a lot of things are surfacing with them, and suddenly we’re dealing with a lot more emotional stuff than usual. It’s as if they feel like now it’s safe for them to let out things they’ve been holding in for a while. Their need to snuggle has also become insatiable. It’s like they’ve been thirsty for this stuff for a while and now that I’m doing my best to make it available they want to drink and drink and drink. I want to give them everything they need (I love snuggling and knowing that their needs are being met), and it’s a little bit fatiguing, too, to spend so much time dealing with strong emotions. I’m trusting that if I keep doing the heavy work, things will become a little less intense after a while.

    • Hi Sarah it’s a while since I first read this and I’m conscious that much change and growth may have happened again since then. So great that you’re really fine tuning the process of being more conscious of your reactions and truly listening and empathizing in a way that hits the spot for the kids. So beautiful that the connection is deepening as you deepen into your relationship with our feelings, which is what allows us to go deeper in relating to our children. So beautiful that they can sense that deeper emotional safety and are feeling more free to let it all out! Have they continued to be super thirsty for all that extra affection, kids just LOVE that super sweet warm connection hey! And beautiful that you’re holding the trust that the intensity will ease as you continue to do the heavy emotional work. This is all so beautiful to read. Are you ok if I share this in the village forum as I’m sure others will really relate?
