Hi, I could have written this myself – my eldest are 9 and 11 (plus we have a 6 year old) and it feels so neverending!! I just want some enjoyment in our lives too, or at least more enjoyment than frustration/sadness/refusal etc. Each time I get to this point I intend to work on some special time with each child…..I also try and stick to the…[Read more]

I can totally relate to this too Natalie – it’s such a difficult place to find the balance to offer all the kids support. We haven’t had much luck talking with a couple of adults in our family around this, although we do manage it as best we can by modelling empathy etc. and over the summer holidays whilst we were with these families we just…[Read more]

Hi Meg,
Thanks for your thoughts and ideas – they are a good place to start to try and reduce his anxiety around this topic. I’ve been very carefully bringing up the sores each day this week and although he is still telling me he doesn’t want to talk about it, he did comment yesterday that he was wearing his longer shorts that covers them, and…[Read more] -

Hi, I’m after some support for my nearly 9 year old – he is our firecracker and the one who has taught me so much about myself and parenting (read: strong-willed child!). He has trauma-related anxiety around anything medical (e.g. doctors, dentists) and for the most part we have left things to chug along and relied on him seeking support if he…[Read more]

Hi,
This would be great! I listened to a recent talk by Barbara Colorosa who talked about sibling bullying and I can see a bit of this happening between my boys (the 8yo is the more dominant over the 10yo), and it worries me. My 8yo is the more challenging child and after pouring lots of energy into him (and of course the other 2 kids), when they…[Read more] -

Hi,
I don’t have any answers but I do have love and understanding as my 10 year old is pushing similar boundaries and I’m also finding it so challenging x -

It’s taken me 6 weeks to find time to come back here to say thank you so much for your replies at the time this happened! Being away and on my phone I find it hard to type long passages hence the delay.
Thank you for all your ideas and links….as always things feel so much harder in the moment, and looking back now I can hardly recall it. but I…[Read more]

My eldest two (8 & 9) just finished a board game. The 8 year old has always struggled with games with rules & although this has improved enourmously this last year we still keep a close eye on how things are going. This game was going v well until the last few minutes. The 9 year old realised he was going to win & was quite enthusiastic in sharing…[Read more]

Thank you Genevieve, your reply puts words to my thoughts, feelings and discomfort at mentioning the smell factor too much (or at all)so I’m relieved to hear you go into more detail on it as I agree with you too – I’m fighting a bit at the moment with appropriate boundaries with the older two and how honest to be (stories coming up for me about…[Read more]

Thanks Genevieve, yes the threat vs natural consequence thing is tricky – and that is what Kane and I mostly discussed as I felt he was shaming the kids by the way he told them he wouldn’t go to dinner with them if they smelt like that, vs explaining it a different way…..although I have to be honest that I have struggled with how to explain…[Read more]

Just popping on here to share a win-win! Cooper hasn’t had a bath for a week or so and was really starting to smell. I’ve been playfully chatting with him around things but mostly backing off, however tonight we are going out for…[Read more]

Again, thank you both for your lovely, supportive replies. I absolutely love Gordon Neufeld’s tears of futility and when I first heard him speaking about this a few years ago it made so much sense – if I remember rightly he talked about the fact that those tears has been found to contain a different make up to normal tears….fascinating! And yes…[Read more]

As you say, it is hard to get all the details across in written form and I know there is far more depth to what I’m saying above, e.g. I can also feel worry about taking up unnecessary space in here, despite the fact that it is exactly the place I can share my thoughts, or that I’ve jumped in with far too much information and missed the…[Read more] -

I know I do too much talking about things with the kids and at the moment (for the first time in a long while) I’m feeling either overwhelmed or very flat about things. My youngest has just started school this term and I think that the build up of emotions from the last 9.5 years of parenting is coming crashing down. I rarely say this, but last…[Read more]
