This is a really helpful article on the topic of stonewalling in relationships. It describes both the negative effects of stonewalling, and how it’s one of the potential predictors of divorce, and also some helpful and very PP aligned suggestions for what a person can do instead. Although stonewalling is an attempt usually to avoid making things worse by saying the “wrong thing”, or an attempt to make the conflict stop, it has the opposite effect of fuelling the fire and creating even more distress. Yet most of us experienced this form of passive aggression in our families of origin.

It’s also a very helpful article in terms of the effects of putting a child in time out, or refusing to respond to them and refusing eye contact as a way of communicating disapproval.
