This is a painful issue that many people are dealing with in their relationship. Like any problem, the first stage of tackling and resolving it is to more clearly identify it and start to become more honest with oneself initially, then gain the support, the tools, the information, the safe space to further explore and work through the issues.

It’s so very important that a partner only agrees to sexual intimacy when they are genuinely feeling open and willing. Giving of oneself body to meet one’s partner’s sexual needs despite this being an unpleasant or even emotionally painful experience does and will lead to a build up of negative associations with sexual intimacy, and potentially lead to strong aversion. Yet there is much that a couple can do to recognize and repair the fears/ inner conflict/ resentments/ guilt and other feelings that have created a block to relaxed and enjoyable sexual and emotional intimacy.

Dr Harley, author of His Needs, Her Needs gives some great insight into the causes, the struggles and the potential healing of sexual aversion.
